IOC eyes France to host 2030 Winter Olympics and Salt Lake City in 2034
PARIS — It was expected that Salt Lake City would be the preferred choice to host the Winter Olympics in 2034. The IOC’s decision on Wednesday to favor the French Alps bid for the 2030 edition was unexpected.
The executive board of the International Olympic Committee has chosen to hold exclusive talks with Olympic officials in France and the United States regarding Salt Lake City, with the goal of securing back-to-back Winter Games hosts for the following year.sportzlanka.com
In the 2034 competition to return the games to Utah, home of the 2002 Winter Games, Salt Lake was the only contender.
In competition with Sweden and Switzerland for the support of the IOC was a French bid that brought together the French Riviera resort of Nice and the snow-capped Alps region.
Additionally, the IOC has given the Swiss bid “privileged dialogue” status in order to direct it toward the 2038 Olympics.
When roughly 100 members get together in Paris on the eve of the Summer Games in July, the IOC last month aimed to make a double award, choosing the hosts for 2030 and 2034 jointly.
In order to prevent a conflict, the original plan called for IOC members to cast their votes for a French bid in the country’s capital.IOC
