Allyson Felix, a seven-time Olympic sprint champion, and Inbee Park, a seven-time major winner in golf, are running for positions as IOC representatives from the athletes competing in the Paris Games.
A list of 32 candidates for the elections scheduled for the July 26–August 11 Games, when about 10,500 athletes are eligible to vote, was released by the International Olympic Committee on Wednesday.
A bevy of Olympic champions vying for four spots in the 100-person IOC membership include Park, the gold medallist for South Korea in golf’s return to the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, and Felix, the legendary American track star who is currently retired.
Yelena Isinbayeva, a Russian pole vaulter, is one of four athletes whose eight-year contracts are up in Paris.
Even though Isinbayeva is an officer in the armed forces, she has maintained her IOC membership and privileges throughout Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Among the new contenders is Ukrainian judoka Georgii Zantaraia, who questioned in October at an international athletes’ conference held by the IOC why certain Russian athletes are being granted neutral status to compete in Paris. Zantaraia proposed that athletes from Russia who were against the conflict may be part of the Olympic refugee squad.
Candidates include Nigerian table tennis star Funke Oshonaike, a seven-time Olympian, and swimmers Yakov Toumarkin and Yazan al Bawwab, who represented Israel and Palestine respectively in the Tokyo Olympics.http://sportzlanka
Three-time gold medallist Áron Szilágyi, a Hungarian fencer, and two-time winners Mariana Pajón (BMX, Colombia), Valent Sinkovic (rowing, Croatia), and Kahena Kunze (sailing, Brazil) are among the other Olympic champions running for votes.
