New Zealand beat Bangladesh by four wickets on the fourth day of the second Test on Saturday to level the two-match series at 1-1 as Ajaz Patel ripped through the Asian side with six wickets before his batting colleagues secured victory.
After Bangladesh’s Zakir Hasan struck a fighting 59, the tourists rode Glenn Phillips’ unbroken 40 and Mitchell Santner’s 35 not out to victory on a difficult track at Mirpur’s Shere Bangla Stadium.
Phillips was dumped for zero by Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, but he kept his cool as the Black Caps were reduced to 69-6 before tea to bring them home.
Bangladesh began on their overnight score of 38-2, but lost wickets quickly in the morning as spinners Patel (6-57) and Santner (3-51) used the turn on offer to pile pressure on the batters.
Patel struck twice in the 25th over to dismiss Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Nurul Hasan, leaving Bangladesh in grave danger at 97-7, but opener Zakir soldiered on as wickets fell at the other end.
Zakir pushed Bangladesh beyond the 100-run mark before hitting Santner for a massive six, but the left-hander became Patel’s sixth victim when he miscued a sweep.
In what was basically the third day of a rain-affected tournament in which a full day was wasted, the hosts were dismissed for 144 before lunch.
New Zealand had clawed their way back into the game on Friday, with to Phillips’ fifty, which gave them an eight-run advantage after Bangladesh reached 172 in their first innings.
Bangladesh defeated New Zealand by 150 runs in the first match, which was their first victory on home soil.
