India beat Canada 10-1 to make quarter-finals

The Indian junior men’s hockey team will face the Netherlands in their final eight clash next on Tuesday.

India advanced to the quarter-finals of the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup 2023 after defeating Canada 10-1 in their last Pool C match on Saturday at the National Hockey Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

With six points from three games, the junior Indian men’s hockey team finished second in their group. Spain leads the standings with nine points after defeating India in hockey on Wednesday.

For India, Aditya Arjun Lalage (8’, 43’), Rohit (12′, 55’), Amandeep Lakra (23’, 51’), Vishnukant (42’), Rajinder (42’), Kushwaha Sourabh Anand (51’) and Uttam Singh (58’) were the goal scorers. For Canada, Jude Nicholson (20’) was on target.

In the first quarter of the FIH Hockey Junior World Cup contest, India put pressure on Canada’s defence and took a 1-0 lead through Aditya Arjun Lalage, who opened the scoring with an excellent field goal.

Rohit doubled India’s lead before the opening quarter ended after converting a penalty corner.

Canada rallied in the second quarter, with Jude Nicholson scoring a clutch field goal in the 21st minute to put his side back in the game. However, that was the last bit of encouragement the Canadian squad received on the night.

Amandeep Lakra successfully scored a penalty corner to give India a two-goal advantage before halftime.

The third quarter was interesting, with both sides upping their offensive game as Canada attempted to recover.

India’s lead was increased when Vishnukant Singh scored from open play. Rajinder Singh contributed as well. Aditya Arjun Lalage scored his second goal of the game in the last minutes of the quarter, extending India’s advantage to 6-1.

With 15 minutes remaining, India continued to probe Canada’s defense. Kushwaha Sourabh Anand, Amandeep Lakra, and Rohit scored three more goals to India’s total before captain Uttam Singh made it 10-1 with two minutes left.

On Tuesday, India will face Pool D champions the Netherlands in the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup 2023 quarter-finals.
