On the first day of the one-off match against England, India became just the second side in 88 years to score more than 400 runs in a single day in women’s Test cricket.
India’s historic encounter against England at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Thursday saw them become just the second side in women’s Test history to score 400 or more runs in a single day.
In its first home Test since 2014, India chose to bat after winning the toss and amassed a large run total thanks to significant contributions from both the top and middle order. Shubha Satheesh (69) and Jemimah Rodrigues (68), making their debuts, each scored half-centuries as they put up a third-wicket partnership of 115 runs.
Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain, achieved her best Test score but was dismissed with an unusual run-out, preventing her from reaching her first fifty. Yastika Bhatia, the wicketkeeper, followed her at number six and also achieved her first fifty with an 88-ball 66 that included 10 fours and 1 six. To assist India surpass 400 runs, lower-order batsmen Deepti Sharma and Sneh Rana also put up a fifty-plus partnership for the seventh wicket.
By reaching the milestone in 78 balls, Deepti became the fourth half-centurion of the innings. Then, in 89.1 overs, Deepti and Rana took India beyond 400. In their most recent home Test against South Africa in 2014, India achieved a higher total than it had ever had before, surpassing the previous record of 400/6 decl.
After 94 overs, India reached 410 for seven at stumps, with Deepti (60) and Pooja Vastrakar (4) still undefeated.
In 88 years, it was the first time a team in the women’s Tests has scored more than 400 runs in a single day. With an incredible 431 for two versus New Zealand at Lancaster Park, Christchurch in 1935, England Women own the overall record.
India’s achievement also became the highest total in a single day in the country, beating the previous record of 379 set by Australia Women (329-8) and India (50-0) in 1984. It was also just the third time that both teams have scored more than 400 runs in a single day.
