Lionel Messi 2022 World Cup jerseys predicted to top $10 million at auction

The sports world keeps seeing Lionel Messi in the news. Messi’s jersey from Argentina’s thrilling 2022 FIFA World Cup triumph against France in Qatar is predicted to fetch a record-breaking $10 million (£8 million) at Sotheby’s in New York on Thursday when a set of six shirts from the event are put up for auction.

Notably, the set of shirts will establish a new standard for sports tops if bids surpass an extraordinary $10.1 million. The most amount was still paid last year—a staggering $10.09 million—for a jersey that legendary basketball player Michael Jordan wore in Game 1 of the 1998 NBA Finals.

Furthermore, if the amount exceeds the £71,42,500 ($90,28,298) paid earlier this year for the jersey worn by Argentina great Diego Maradona, Messi’s clothes would become the most expensive football outfit ever sold. Wearing the jersey, the late Maradona scored twice in Argentina’s 2-1 victory over England in the 1986 World Cup Round of 8, including the renowned “hand of God” goal.

The two jerseys that Messi wore throughout the group stage make up his set. The remaining four were worn in the knockout stages, which included the quarterfinals, semifinals, final, and Round of 16. Argentina defeated Australia (2-1), the Netherlands (4-3 on penalties), and Croatia (3-0) in the R-16 quarterfinals, semifinals, and final, respectively, in the run-up to the match.

In relation to Messi’s World Cup experience, the 36-year-old had an incredible campaign that culminated in him winning the Golden Ball for best player. After 36 years, he returned with seven goals, second only to France’s Kylian Mbappe, and guided the team to its third World Cup victory. He scored twice when Argentina defeated France 4-2 in the penalty shootout during the summit match, which started as a 3-3 tie after extra time.
