Women’s World Cup winner Spain rose atop the FIFA rankings published Friday after advancing to the final four of the UEFA Nations League.
This month, Spain emerged victorious from a Nations League group that featured Sweden, the team that had topped the most recent FIFA rankings released in August following the Women’s World Cup.
For the first time, Spain is ranked #1, surpassing the US, France, and England, the World Cup finalists. Sweden fell to No. 5, down four spots.
Spain, behind the United States, Germany, and Sweden, is now the fourth-ranked country in the women’s division since the rankings were established in 2003, according to FIFA.
In February, Spain, France, Germany, and the Netherlands will compete in a mini-tournament organized by the Nations League. Joining host France in July for the Olympics in Paris will be two teams.
According to FIFA, 192 out of its 211 member federations are currently represented in the women’s rankings.
