Hardik Pandya is set to take over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma in a major Mumbai Indians revamp

The Mumbai Indians, who will undergo a significant makeover for the 2018 Indian Premier League (IPL), will be led by Hardik Pandya. After leading the team to five IPL victories during his time as captain, Rohit Sharma will be replaced by Hardik, who arrived back in Mumbai on the trade window deadline. He now leads the record IPL champions, joining the likes of Ricky Ponting, Harbhajan Singh, and Sachin Tendulkar.

The cricket community was taken aback by the revelation on Friday, December 15, as Rohit had chosen to resign as captain. After leading the Gujarat Titans (GT) for the last two seasons, Pandya will now try to assist his new side, the Mumbai Indians, win the championship.

It’s interesting to note that Pandaya led GT to victory in his first season there, defeating Rajasthan Royals in the competition final in 2022. On the Indian cricket squad, Pandaya serves as Rohit’s deputy as well, but he is presently recovering from an injury.

It is a component of creating a lasting legacy and upholding the MI principle of being prepared for the future. The Mumbai Indians have always had outstanding leadership, from Sachin to Harbhajan and Ricky to Rohit, who have all worked to build the squad for the future while also contributing to the club’s current success. For the 2024 Indian Premier League season, Hardik Pandya will lead the Mumbai Indians as captain, according to this ideology.

“We are grateful to Rohit Sharma for his outstanding leadership; since 2013, he has led the Mumbai Indians in a manner that is truly remarkable. Mahela Jayawardene, Global Head of Performance, Mumbai Indians, said in a statement, “His leadership has not only brought unparalleled success to the team but has also solidified his place as one of the finest captains in the history of the IPL.”

Rohit took over the captaincy reigns in 2013 from Ricky Ponting in the middle of the season and led the team to their first IPL title.

He then lead Mumbai to victories in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020, becoming the most successful captain in the history of the tournament. Later, MS Dhoni in 2023 helped his team Chennai Super Kings bag the title for the fifth time and joined Rohit Sharma to achieve this feat.
