Mitchell Starc became the most expensive player ever bought in the cash-rich league.

The highly anticipated auction for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 took place on December 19 in Dubai, igniting a fervent bidding war among the league’s ten franchises, namely the Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Titans, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Lucknow Super Giants, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings, Chennai Super Kings, and Rajasthan Royals.

The auction, which included a roster of over 300 players, promised a combination of excitement and strategic maneuvering as teams attempted to bolster their squads in preparation for the next season.

Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins steal the show

The auction saw unparalleled enthusiasm as Australian speed superstars Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins stole the show, rewriting the record books in a bidding frenzy that left cricket fans speechless. Starc, the lightning-fast Australian bowler, broke previous auction records to become the most expensive player in IPL history.

The Kolkata Knight Riders paid INR 24.75 crore (US$2,982,000 approx.) for Starc’s services, breaking the previous record set by Australia’s ODI World Cup-winning captain Pat Cummins, who commanded a winning bid of INR 20.50 crore (US$2,470,000 approx.) from Sunrisers Hyderabad at the same bidding event. Starc’s return to the IPL auction stage represented a joyful reunion with the Kolkata Knight Riders, who had previously purchased him for INR 9.4 crore in 2018.

The auction extravaganza was not limited to Australian skill. Emerging stars from other cricketing nations also got the benefits of their outstanding performances in India during the recent ODI World Cup. Daryl Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra of New Zealand, Australia’s Travis Head, South Africa’s talented all-rounder Gerald Coetzee, and Sri Lanka’s rising bowler Dilshan Madushanka all signed IPL contracts, adding to the league’s global flavor.
