Houghton Submitted His Resignation ZCB
2023.12.22
After Zimbabwe was unable to secure a spot in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, head coach Dave Houghton announced his resignation.
After Houghton tendered his resignation as head coach of the senior Zimbabwe men’s team, the board accepted it right away.Following Zimbabwe’s elimination from the Africa Region Qualifier for the T20 World Cup 2024, Zimbabwe Cricket established a three-person committee led by Lloyd Mhishi to investigate the reasons behind the World Cup qualifying loss. Zimbabwe placed third on the points table after losing to Namibia and Uganda in the qualifier; a top-two finish was required to advance to the world championship.
In his letter of resignation, Houghton expressed his belief that the side required a “new voice” to advance. After 18 months in command, the 66-year-old continued, stating that he had “lost the changeroom.”Houghton was hailed by ZC Chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani for his unwavering work with the Zimbabwean side. Houghton will continue to serve the board, he said, but in a new role.
“Although the last few months have been disheartening due to our inability to secure spots in the 50-over and T20 World Cups, it is important to acknowledge the tremendous amount of work that he has done in the last year to lay the groundwork for sustained success.”
“Dave leaves the team with our sincerest thanks for his tireless efforts and we are looking forward to working with him in a different role as we seek to change our on-field fortunes.”
Houghton thought he may work with ZC on further projects.
“Zimbabwe cricket has always been close to my heart, and even though I will no longer be coaching the national team, I would love to be involved in other endeavors.” Zimbabwe has a large talent pool. Being a part of the process that takes players from being gifted to competing successfully on the global scene is an amazing opportunity.
Zimbabwe will be led by an interim technical team for the forthcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka.
