The Premier League has its first female referee
In a historic occasion for the top division in England, Rebecca Welch blew the whistle to begin the match between Fulham and Burnley on Saturday.
Before the game at Craven Cottage, she came out of the tunnel to cheers from some supporters.
Welch has previously served as the Premier League’s fourth official for the November 4 match between Fulham and Manchester United. She has managed games in the FA Cup and the second-tier Championship.
Since 2010, Welch has officiated games. Initially, she combined her officiating duties with her work at the National Health Service, but eventually she became a full-time match official.
