Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka win ITF World Champion awards for 2023
Being the only singles players to go to at least the semifinals in each of the four Grand Slam events this season, Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka were recognized as the International Tennis Federation’s 2023 ITF World Champions on Thursday of last week.
In addition to winning the Australian Open, French Open, and U.S. Open to increase his major title tally to a men’s-leading 24, Djokovic also placed second at Wimbledon and topped the ATP rankings for a record-breaking eighth time. He finished 56-7 and won seven championships to lead the men’s tour.
This is a record-tying seventh ITF World Champion title for him.After winning the Australian Open, her maiden Grand Slam title, placing second at the U.S. Open, and reaching the semifinals of both the French Open and Wimbledon, Sabalenka was bestowed with this accolade for the first time.
In September, Sabalenka debuted at the top of the WTA rankings, and she concluded the year ranked second, just behind WTA Player of the Year Iga Swiatek.
Other ITF World Champions included the following: Diede de Groot in the women’s wheelchair category, Alfie Hewett in the men’s wheelchair category, Niels Vink in the quad wheelchair category, Storm Hunter and Elise Mertens in the women’s doubles, and Alina Korneeva and Joao Fonseca in the juniors categories.
Grand Slam tournaments and ITF international team competitions are given special consideration when choosing ITF World Champions.
