The news comes after a successful test run of the event at Singapore’s Olympic Esports Week in 2023.

In 2024, table tennis will have a world championship tournament. This comes after a virtual reality table tennis demonstration event this year was well-received.

The formation of a VR Table Tennis World-Title Event for the next year has been accepted by the executive board of the International Table Tennis Federation, the organization said earlier this month.

VR table tennis was an exhibition event during the first-ever Olympic Esports Week in June 2023 in Singapore.

ITTF President Petra Sörling stated, “VR Table Tennis represents an integral part of the ITTF’s mission to elevate the profile of table tennis worldwide.” “By embracing esports and constant innovation, we are shaping the future of table tennis, taking it to new heights.”

According to Sörling, the International Olympic Committee’s declaration that it will look into the possibility of creating an Olympic Esports Games was taken into account when authorizing such an event.

“The success of the Olympic Esports [Week] and the perspective of Olympic Esports Games inspired us to expedite our efforts, ensuring that we are well-prepared and experienced to contribute significantly to future esports events,” she stated.

Players of all ages may play competitive table tennis together in virtual reality. A match between a 17-year-old and a 50-year-old took place in the semi-finals of the exhibition tournament held in Singapore earlier this year.

In the exhibition show final, Antonin Landreau of France declared victory.
