India beat South Africa by seven wickets at the Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town on Thursday, in a match became the shortest in Test history to end in a result.

The second Test between the two sides lasted just 642 balls, which fell short of the 656-ball mark set by Australia and South Africa in 1932 at Melbourne.

In Newlands, bowlers controlled the roost on both days, with Day 1 commencing with India. The visiting team was allowed to bowl first, and they promptly went through the South African batting order, with Mohammed Siraj, a right-arm bowler, taking six wickets in particular.

India also suffered greatly from a surface that had inconsistent bounce, falling short of 153/4 in 11 balls.

With 23 wickets lost on the first day of play in a Test match, South Africa finished the first day at 62/3.

During the second day’s morning practice, Jasprit Bumrah caused chaos by grabbing a fifer. South Africa lost the first innings before opener Aiden Markram scored a counterattacking century. India made sure the record books were wiped clean by hunting down the meek goal of 79 in 12 overs.
