India’s record win against South Africa
2024.01.05
India’s seven-wicket victory came in the second session on the second day, its first-ever Test win at the Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town with the visitors needing only 79 to win.
India’s cricket players will return home with their heads held high, but for a while longer, the ultimate frontier will remain the final frontier.
India finished the second Test against South Africa on Thursday with plenty of time to spare, leveling the two-Test series at 1-1.
On a very difficult track, Aiden Markram achieved an incredible hundred (106, 103b, 17×4, 2×6), but it could only postpone the inevitable.
India won the second Test match at the Newlands Cricket Ground by a seven-wicket margin in the second session on the second day. In addition, it turned out to be the shortest Test cricket match ever played. India defeated the Melbourne record of 656 balls in 1932 by winning in 642 balls.
Naturally, statisticians have enjoyed this Test match just as much as hitters have, but the former has been a nightmare for the latter. For one individual, though, it was an opportunity to showcase his extraordinary skill as a batter to the world.
Markram was exceptionally intelligent. Most likely, he was playing the innings of his life. It is unfortunate that South Africa was unable to secure a strong enough lead to present India with a challenge of any kind.
It took the visitors just 79 to win. After being down by 36 runs, the South Africans had resumed at 62 for three from the previous night. Jasprit Bumrah would not allow them to establish a reasonable lead, even if they would have been hopeful.
The Indian spearhead may have played a supporting role in the first innings, but he wasn’t going to let this Test without making a significant contribution on his own. He broke through in the very first over of the day, getting rid of David Bedingham, whose attempt to drive ended in the gloves of K.L. Rahul behind the stumps.
After Kyle Verreyne was caught at mid-on by his new-ball partner, he dismissed Marco Jansen with a brilliant catch off his own bowling. Finishing with six for 61 was Bumrah.
For the entire time, it appeared as though Markram was batting on a surface that was distinct from everyone else’s (perhaps with the exception of the magnificent Virat Kohli, who towered above India’s wreckage on the first day).
And Kohli is aware of the skill, concentration, and resolve a batsman has to possess in order to perform on a pitch like this, up against a top-notch attack, and in the team’s desperate circumstances. He approached Markram to congratulate him on reaching his hundred.
That would have been welcomed by Markram. And the graceful opener rewarded the good-natured audience, who had come maybe hoping for a miracle, to some really impressive batsmanship.
Markram made numerous excellent shots with excellent timing, the most of them were near the ground. He also made some excellent ground clearing moves on a few more times. Prasidh Krishna hit the two sixes off the opening over of the innings. One of the strokes of the match was the first, which was lofted above the bowler’s head and drawn gloriously over square-leg.
