Chamari Athapattu named in 2023 ICC Women’s T20 squad

Among the players that excelled in the international women’s Twenty20 field in 2023, Chamari Athapattu of Sri Lanka was selected captain of the Twenty20 squad of the year by the ICC.

With great success, the Sri Lankan women’s cricket team concluded the previous year, and Chamari was appointed captain.

The Sri Lankan team, captained by Chamari, defeated South Africa in the 2023 Women’s Twenty20 World Cup, with Chamari scoring 68 runs off the bat.

Later, even though Sri Lanka lost the T20 series played during the women’s team visit to New Zealand, Sri Lanka prevailed in the series finale thanks to 80 runs from Chamari’s bat.

Chamari, who represented Sri Lanka in 16 Twenty20 matches last year, amassed 470 runs with a batting average of 31.33 and a strike rate of 130.91.

She also bowled well last year, taking eight wickets. Because of all these abilities, Chamari’s name was also suggested for the ICC Women’s Player of the Year award in 2023.

The ICC chose Chamari to lead the T20 team last year after taking all of these things into account.

The team captained by Chamari also features South Africa’s Hayley Matthews, the leading run scorer in the T20 International the previous year, Laura Wolvaardt, the second-highest run scorer of the year, and New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr, who turned in an excellent all-around performance.

The Women’s T20 squad for 2023 announced by the ICC is as follows

Chamari Athapattu (captain), Beth Mooney (Australia), Laura Wolvaardt (South Africa), Hayley Matthews (West Indies), Nat Sciver-Brunt (England), Amelia Kerr (New Zealand), Ellyse Perry (Australia), Ash Gardner ( Australia), Deepti Sharma (India), Sophie Ecclestone (England) and Megan Schutt (England)
