The ICC’s ODI Player of the Year 2023 award went to Chamari Athapattu, Sri Lanka’s captain in the One-Day Internationals.

For the first time ever, an ICC award of this kind will be given to a Sri Lankan cricket player, Chamari, who was chosen among the players who excelled in the women’s one-day cricket competition last year.

Only one of the three prizes that the ICC was supposed to offer this year went to Chamari, despite her name being proposed for three. But there’s no denying that this past year was among Chamari Athapattu’s finest in his career.

Only a small number of one-day matches (eight) could be played by the Sri Lankan squad last year. With a batting average of 69.16 and a high strike rate of 125.37, Chamari was able to score 415 runs in these games.

Chamari contributed a crucial half-century with the bat in Sri Lanka’s 1-0 victory over Bangladesh in their one-day series that began last year.

Following that, Chamari scored a winning double century (108 and 140) during the New Zealand women’s team’s furious tour to Sri Lanka. As a result of the two centuries, Sri Lanka was able to win an ODI series against New Zealand.

However, Sri Lanka was unable to win the ODI series in England. It goes without saying that Chamari’s bat was ineffective in this situation and was the main cause of his loss.

These tournament successes were largely due to Chamari’s bat, ball, and leadership, and as a result, the ICC has awarded her the captain of the women’s ODI team of the year.
