India and Australia surge to big wins
2024.01.26
With a commanding century from Musheer Khan and a four-wicket burst from fast bowler Naman Tiwari, India maintained their flawless start to the Under-19 World Cup. The squad defeated Ireland handily in Bloemfontein.
India amassed 301 for 7 after being asked to bat first. Musheer and skipper Uday Saharan’s third-wicket partnership, which produced 156 runs, was the mainstay of their innings. After taking his time to get comfortable, Musheer picked up speed as the innings went on and finished with a score of 118 off 106 balls, including nine fours and four sixes. Saharan provided steady companionship, ensuring that the majority of the runs were made in singles and doubles, while the skipper of India scored 75, his second consecutive half-century.
Both batsmen would eventually go out, but India’s late cameos from Sachin Dhas (21* off 9) and Aravelly Avanish (22 off 13) helped them push the score above 300. Oliver Riley, who finished with 3 for 55, was the best bowler for Ireland.
Ireland had little chance of winning as Tiwari rapidly destroyed their middle and top order, and then Saumy Pandey, a left-arm spinner, further damaged the team’s hopes. With just three boundaries between them, six of Ireland’s first eight batsmen fell for single-digit scores, and the side was soon reeling at 45 for 8, effectively ending the match. Ireland lost by 201 runs in the end, despite Daniel Forkin being the team’s best scorer at No. 10 with 27 not out. His late blows just postponed the inevitable. Pandey finished with 3 for 21, while Tiwari recorded 4 for 53.
India 301 for 7 (Musheer 118, Saharan 75, Riley 3-55) beat Ireland 100 (Forkin 27*, Tiwari 4-53, Pandey 3-21) by 201 runs
Australia vs Zimbabwe
Australia defeated Zimbabwe by 225 runs in Kimberley to win the 2024 Under-19 World Cup for the second time in a row. Harry Dixon, who was already involved in a BBL contract before the World Cup, and Harkirat Bajwa, who played for Australia with the bat and the ball, respectively, were the main players. With 297 in the target, Zimbabwe gave up for 71.
The only hitter from Zimbabwe to reach 15 in the chase was Ronak Patel. In support of Bawja, who took 4 for 15, Mahli Beardman and Aidan O’Connor split four wickets between them.
Australia made the decision to bat, and they got off to a great start as Dixon and Sam Konstas added 91 runs for the first wicket. Along with the runs, Captain Hugh Weibgen struck 68 off 69 balls, including five fours and a six. Dixon led them in scoring with 89 runs off of 108 balls. With an undefeated 47 off 28 balls, Tom Campbell then put the finishing touches on the game.
Subsequently, Zimbabwe failed to gain momentum in their pursuit and ultimately suffered their second consecutive loss.
Australia Under-19s 296 for 7 (Dixon 89, Weibgen 68, Sunguro 2-48) beat Zimbabwe Under-19s 71 (Patel 36, Bajwa 4-15, Beardman 2-7) by 225 runs
