Chamari is given the opportunity play WPL
2024.01.27
Chamari Athapattu, the captain of Sri Lanka, will be able to play for the UP Warriorz in the 2024 WPL, which will begin in India in February.
After it was revealed that English player Lauren Bell, who was scheduled to play with UP Warriorz earlier in the season, would not be participating, Chamari was given this opportunity. Maha Lauren has taken on the responsibility of getting ready for the next March cricket match between England and New Zealand.
As a result, Chamari will join the UP Warriorz squad for the INR 30 lakh base salary that she promised at the WPL player auction the previous year.
Many cricket fans lamented the fact that Chamari, who excelled in the international Twenty20 format last year, was not put up for sale in the WPL player auction. In 16 T20 matches the previous year, Chamari amassed 470 runs with a batting average of 31.33 and a strike rate as high as 131. She was also able to bowl well, taking eight wickets.
When it came to the WBBL competition that concluded last year, Chamari’s name was not the first pick. However, Sydney Thunder made the decision to include Chamari in their lineup with not too much time left before the competition began. With 552 runs, Chamari—who subsequently joined the Thunder—finished the 2023 WBBL competition as the second-highest scorer. Here, she was also able to claim nine wickets. Ultimately, Chamari was able to take home prizes for becoming the tournament’s hero.
Chamari then went on to play for the Northern Districts squad in the Super Smash T20 competition in New Zealand, where he amassed 221 runs at bat and 9 wickets at bowling.
It is clear from Chamari’s performances thus far that the UP Warriorz squad will benefit greatly from having her. Here, she will be playing under Alyssa Healy’s leadership, and the two are anticipated to be the UP Warriors’ opening duo.
This year’s WPL tournament is scheduled to be held from February 23 to March 17 in Bangalore and Delhi, India.
