World Marathon Record holder, Kelvin Kiptum is Dead
2024.02.13
Kelvin Kiptum, the world record holder for marathons, passed away in a terrible car accident on Eldoret-Ravine Road.
As they were returning home, the 24-year-old driver of Toyota Premio KDL 566F lost control of the vehicle, which went off the road, fell in a ditch, and drove off for about 60 meters before hitting a post, which ultimately led to his and his coach’s deaths. Dennis Muga, the head of Eldoret traffic commandant, verified the death of the third occupant, Sharon Chepkurui Kosgei, at the site of the collision. She was admitted with critical injuries.
Along with his Rwandan coach, Gervais Hakizimana, Kiptum set a world record for the marathon with a time of 2:00.35 five days ago. The bodies were transported to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH).
After entering the Chicago Marathon on October 8th of last year, Kiptum—who is considered to be among the best runners in the world—managed to break the previous record by finishing the race in a time of 02 hours and 35 seconds.
He ran that marathon as his third international race, and on February 6th, World Athletics formally acknowledged the world record he had established.
But regrettably, there won’t be another opportunity for the public to see him alive in any capacity after today.
