Olympic and Paralympic medals for Paris 2024 revealed
2024.02.14
The countdown to the Paris 2024 Olympic Tennis Event and Paralympic Wheelchair Tennis Event can now officially begin, as the medals were revealed on Thursday.
Whether gold, silver, or bronze, competitors who are fortunate enough to win a medal at the 2018 Games will also carry home a piece of history, with each holding a unique piece of metal that was formerly part of the Eiffel Tower.
Eighteen kilos of the original Eiffel Tower iron have been put into the center of each medal like a gem, suitable given that the renowned structure has long been Paris’ crowning glory.
“There was a huge amount of work done to try to bring together these precious metals – gold, silver, and bronze – with the most precious metal in the Eiffel Tower, the jewel in the French crown,” said Tony Estanguet, President of the Paris 2024 Organising Committee.
“What’s impactful for this year will be having a part of the original Eiffel Tower metal, the iron, in these various medals, and so this is what we wanted to do, to infuse all these 2024 athletes with that metal.”
For Paris 2024, a total of 5,084 medals were made, each measuring 85mm in diameter and 9.2mm thick. The gold medal weights 529 grams, silver 525 grams, and bronze 455 grams.
