Fernando’s strong ODI performance was a major factor in his inclusion in the team. He had made 91 off 66 balls and 88 runs-a-ball in two of the three games in the series against Afghanistan. Due to a mix of form and fitness, he has been an erratic member of Sri Lanka’s team since his last Twenty20 international match in January of last year. But it seems that Sri Lanka’s new selection committee wants to reinsert him into the first teams.
In contrast, Vandersay hasn’t participated in a T20I in two years. In the matches where Hasaranga is suspended, he effectively fills in for Hasaranga. Maheesh Theekshana and Akila Dananjaya are the team’s two front-line spinners.
The first T20I is scheduled for March 4. The whole series will be played in Sylhet.
