Marais Erasmus, a seasoned South African umpire, has announced his retirement from international umpiring, after an incredible career spanning all sports.
Erasmus, who is renowned for his outstanding services to cricket, said in an exclusive interview with Cricbuzz that he formally informed the International Cricket Council (ICC) of his retirement intention in October of the previous year. With Erasmus’s retirement, an era in international umpiring will come to an end. Erasmus is currently refereeing in the Test series between Australia and New Zealand.
“I will miss the trip and the perks. However, I’m sick of being away from home and living in discomfort. I believe that I would prefer a more routine existence. Erasmus stated, “I made the decision in October of last year, and I told the ICC that I would end my contract in April and that would be that.
Erasmus, who made the switch from seam-bowling all-rounder to umpire, will always be remembered in the cricket community. His outstanding record consists of 43 T20Is, 124 ODIs, 80 Tests, and 18 women’s T20Is in addition to his contributions to 43 T20Is for men. His distinguished career was further enhanced by his work as the TV umpire for 131 men’s international matches across several forms.
In 2016, 2017, and 2021, Erasmus received three ICC Umpire of the Year honors in recognition of his outstanding performances. With this accomplishment, he joins the elite, alongside Aleem Dar and Richard Kettleborough, while Simon Taufel holds the top rank with five honors. Erasmus made a lasting impression on the world of cricket officiating when he joined the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires in 2010.
