Sri Lanka won the competition today (09) 2-1 after defeating Bangladesh by 28 runs in the third and final Twenty20 match.
In the match that began in Sylhet, Bangladesh this afternoon, skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto of Bangladesh was able to win the toss and chose to bowl first once more.
Vanindu Hasaranga, the normal captain, led the Sri Lankan squad once more in this match following his suspension. Additionally, due to an injury, Matisha Pathirana, who was a member of the Sri Lankan side that participated in the previous T20 encounter, was unable to play in this match. Additionally, Avishka Fernando and Dilshan Madushanka were excluded from the team for today’s (09) match. Rather, for today’s encounter, Dhananjaya de Silva, Nuvan Thushara, and skipper Vanindu joined the Sri Lankan lineup.
Today, Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya, who was called up to the team instead of Avishka, who struggled throughout the competition, opened the Sri Lankan innings, but their opening wicket partnership was only able to muster 18 runs. After long time, Dhananjaya finally obtained it, although he only scored eight points.
Similar to the previous two games, Kamindu was unable to prosper in this one even though he came into the wicket after Dhananjaya. Wanindu, the captain, altered the batting order and took the wicket when Kamindu’s innings was cut short by 12 runs. Between them, they made 59 runs for the third wicket. Also, Kusal Mendis was given extra weight because of the link between these two, who provided the slow Sri Lankan innings with the required speed.
After Wanindu departed the field with a score of 12 runs from 13 balls, Charit Asankata entered the wicket but did not fare well today. After Asanka, Mathews joined Kusal at the wicket, but Kusal lost his wicket, ending Sri Lanka’s promising start to the innings. Kusal hit six fours and six sixes in his 86 off 55 balls, but he was unfortunatetly run out before he could reach his first T20 century today.
Following this, Mathews and Shanaka formed a partnership on the field, just like in the previous game, but this time there was more harmony and they didn’t stop at the wicket. Sadira Samarawickrama, who had been batting last in the batting order up until this point, came into the field as Mathews’ innings came to an end with 10 runs.
Sadira and Dasun helped Sri Lanka establish a substantial scoreboard by batting until the end of the innings. Here, Dasun’s bat scored 19 runs in a hurry.
The customary Bengali opening batting pair went into the field to attempt to chase the 175-run goal set by Sri Lanka, while Mathews began the bowling for his team. However, Dhananjaya de Silva had to finish that over since Angelo Mathews departed the field after the first ball of the third over of the innings. Here, Nuvan Thushara, who entered the game in place of Matisha, picked up the ball after Litton Das’s wicket went off Dhananjaya’s opening delivery.
He struck Najmul Shanto straight on the stumps with the second ball of the fourth over of the Bangladeshi innings, then again with the third ball, hitting Towhid Hridoy straight on the stumps. The on-field umpire saw this as an opportunity to disguise the wicket and signaled the dismissal when Thushara’s fourth ball of the innings, which was intended to take three wickets, struck Mahmudullah’s leg cover.
Nuwan Thushara also made history today by being the sixth bowler for Sri Lanka to grab three wickets in a row. Not content to stop there, Thushara took Soumya Sarkar’s wicket in his subsequent over.
After entering the game later, captain Vanindu made a splash and finished the Bangladeshi innings with two wickets.
But Rishad Hossain, who hit seven sixes and 53 runs off 30 balls, gave the Bangladeshi innings some life, even if they were nothing near winning. Taskin Ahmed, meanwhile, scored 31 runs off of 21 balls.
Meanwhile, Nuwan Thushara defeated Shoriful Islam to reach his five-wicket milestone. Thushara delivered the 18th and final over of the innings.
Sri Lanka won the match by 28 points. And with this victory, Sri Lanka managed to win the T20 series by 2-1.
