The team’s problem with death-overs bowling persists, and head coach Daren Sammy stated that the selection of players for different bowling positions is nearing.
Head coach Daren Sammy stated that West Indies has put together a “dangerous” batting lineup and that all that is left to do is designate precise responsibilities for its bowlers in order to be ready for the home T20 World Cup in June.
Under Sammy’s leadership, West Indies won their two T20 World Cup championships in 2012 and 2016. The team continues to be dominant in cricket’s shortest format.
It triumphed in the Twenty20 International series against South Africa, India, and England in 2023 and, while losing the series 2-1, scored more than 200 runs three times in a row earlier this year in Australia.
In a video interview with Cricket West Indies, Sammy stated, “It sends a strong message to the world that West Indies is a dangerous force.”
“I’ve told my guys that before. “I’ve seen this team before, this type of power, the explosiveness,” I told them. I had led that squad previously. Seeing as how it has been eight years since I stopped playing the game, these are exciting times for us since the World Cup is approaching in June.
The side is still having trouble with death-overs bowling, though, and Sammy stated that it was deciding which bowlers would be the best fit for each position.
Sammy is considering fast bowler Shamar Joseph for the World Cup following the 24-year-old’s sensational debut in an Australian Test series earlier this year.
Winning the World Cup on home soil would help maintain the excitement in the game, since Joseph’s accomplishments were highly praised throughout the area, according to Sammy.
“There’s a buzz when West Indies do well,” he remarked.
“You witnessed the excitement that Shamar Joseph’s adventures in Australia generated across the Caribbean. Therefore, it will mean everything to us and to me as a coach to raise the silverware.
In Providence, Guyana, Rovman Powell and his team will play Papua New Guinea in Group C of the World Cup.
