The men’s team for the forthcoming T20 World Cup 2024 has been announced by Cricket South Africa (CSA), including notable selections and omissions. The team’s explosive middle-order batsman, Aiden Markram, will lead by example as they compete internationally.

Temba Bavuma, a former Proteas captain who captained South Africa in the 2022 T20 World Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup, is not included in the team. In addition to Bavuma, the roster is devoid of Wayne Parnell and Rilee Rossouw, who were not included in South Africa’s last T20 World Cup team.

Notable developments include fast bowler Ottniel Baartman and opening batsman Ryan Rickelton, who made their T20 International debuts and impressed at this year’s SA20. Baartman was the second-highest wicket-taker in the SA20, while Rickelton emerged as the top run-scorer in both the SA20 competition and the most recent CSA T20 Challenge.

After a nine-month break, speed wonder Anrich Nortje has returned to the South African team. With Nortje back, the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 would have more options when it comes to quick bowling.

The team is made up of both seasoned players and young, bright prospects. The bowling assault is further varied by the wristspinner Tabraiz Shamsi and the left-arm spinners Keshav Maharaj and Bjorn Fortuin.

Faf du Plessis, who was expected to return to the national team, isn’t included on the roster, though. In a same vein, Matthew Breetzke and Rassie van der Dussen, who scored the most runs in the SA20 and CSA T20 Challenge, respectively, were not taken into account.

South Africa’s T20 World Cup squad:

Aiden Markram (captain), Ottniel Baartman, Gerald Coetzee, Quinton de Kock, Bjorn Fortuin, Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, David Miller, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tabraiz Shamsi, Tristan Stubbs.
Travelling reserves: Nandre Burger and Lungi Ngidi

Series against West Indies

Ahead of the World Cup, South Africa will play a series against West Indies. Van der Dussen and Breetzke will travel with a second-string Proteas side for the series against the Caribbeans, with uncapped legspinner Nqaba Peter also included in the squad.
