The 1930s-era Allen Stand will be completely dismantled, and a new, extra-tiered building will be built in its place. Meanwhile, the Tavern Stand will receive a new, cantilevered fourth story seating level.

The 18,000 members of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) have accepted the plans for the ground improvements, according to a statement released on Thursday.

Robert Ebdon, Director of MCC Estates, stated, “The reconstruction of the Tavern and Allen stands will complete our stand development program, in which we have modernized facilities at Lord’s to continue to ensure the Ground remains a world-class venue for cricket.”

The 1930s-era Allen Stand will be completely dismantled and replaced with a new structure with an additional tier, while the Tavern Stand will receive a new cantilevered fourth floor seating level above the old structure that will remain.

According to the MCC, the current Tavern Stand steel structure will be kept in place in accordance with its environmental pledges, saving 613 tonnes of CO2.

The architects WilkinsonEyre drew inspiration for the new roof’s design from the shape and ribbed structure of many conventional slip cradles that have been turned upside down and are used by athletes for catching practice.

After the current season ends in September, construction is anticipated to begin and be finished in 2027. The seasons of 2025 and 2026 will have pauses.
