CHINA AND THE PHILIPPINES SET TO HOST VOLLEYBALL CHALLENGER CUP 2024
2024.05.11
From July 4–7, 2024, China and Manila, Philippines will host the world for the Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Challenger Cup (VCC) finals. Teams are competing for a berth in the redesigned Volleyball Nations League (VNL), which will launch in 2025, and the stakes are enormous.
The Men’s VCC will take place at Linyi, which is in Shandong province’s southern region and is a recent addition to the world of international volleyball hosting. Mexico, the victorious team from the 2023 NORCECA International League Final Four, Egypt (CAVB) and Chile (CSV), who both qualified via the FIVB World Ranking at the conclusion of the previous national team season, will be joining the host nation, China.
For its grand finale, the Women’s VCC will travel to Manila, the bustling metropolis of the Philippines, and play at Ninoy Aquino Stadium. The Philippine squad will face off against Puerto Rico, Kenya (CAVB), Argentina (CSV), and the winners of the NORCECA International League Final Four 2023, Puerto Rico. The latter three teams qualified based on the FIVB World Ranking at the conclusion of the previous national team season.
By June 17th, it will be known which teams would advance to the Linyi Olympic Sport Park and the Philippines for the VCC championship match. Specifically, the winner of the AVC Challenger 2024 in early June will fill the Asian quota for both the men’s and women’s VCC. The champion and runner-up from the CEV Golden League 2024, which ends on June 16, will represent Europe. On June 17, the highest ranking team that hasn’t yet qualified will receive the final spot.
“We are excited to have locked in two strong hosts in Asia for the 2024 Volleyball Challenger Cup,” said Finn Taylor, CEO of Volleyball World. Teams are competing for a spot in the expanded VNL next year, which is expected to unlock the full commercial potential of our premier yearly event. This edition looks to be the most exciting yet.
The competition will conclude with the VCC in 2024, making room for the redesigned VNL to launch in 2025. The revamped VNL seeks to improve the competition’s efficiency, boost its economic appeal, and improve the global athlete, fan, host city, and stakeholder experience.
The participants in the redesigned VNL will no longer be split into core and challenger teams, and the competition will instead allow up to 18 teams per gender. Therefore, at the conclusion of the VNL 2024 season, no teams will be relegated, and the teams that place highest in the FIVB Men’s and Women’s Volleyball World Ranking but have not yet qualified will participate in the VNL 2025 competition. The winners of the 2024 VCC will also be included.
