In the opening Twenty20 International of Pakistan’s tour of Ireland in 2024, Ireland defeated Pakistan in a thrilling match played at Castle Avenue in Dublin. The Men in Green were defeated by the hosts by a margin of five wickets.
Ireland chose to bowl first after winning the toss in an effort to limit Pakistan’s batting strength. Pakistan made a great start thanks to captain Babar Azam’s elegant 57 off 43 deliveries and Saim Ayub’s aggressive 45 runs off 29 balls.
But Pakistan was restrained by the tight bowling of Craig Young and Gareth Delany. In their allocated 20 overs, Pakistan amassed a competitive score of 182/6 thanks to a late charge from Iftikhar Ahmed.
As Ireland chased 183 to win, they displayed incredible batting ability. With a brilliant innings of 77 runs off 55 balls, Andrew Balbirnie spearheaded the attack. Harry Tector chipped in with a cool 36 off 27 deliveries. Curtis Campher’s cameo and George Dockrell’s explosive 24 meant that Ireland reached the mark with just one ball remaining, even though they lost wickets at critical times.
With two wickets for thirty-six runs, Abbas Afridi was the best bowler for Pakistan as the bowlers failed to stem the Irish assault. Their attempts were unsuccessful, though, as Ireland won with five wickets remaining. Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, and Imad Wasim each contributed one wicket, but Ireland managed to secure an exciting victory despite their combined bowling efforts.
