2024.05.19
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) defeated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Saturday, clinching the final playoff position in the IPL 2024. RCB preserved their 218-run total, prevailing by 27 runs at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium to eliminate defending champions CSK and secure fourth place in the points rankings.
RCB took full advantage of batting first at home, scoring a strong score in the allotted overs. The innings began nicely, with openers Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis laying a solid foundation. Kohli struck 47 runs in 29 balls, including 3 fours and 4 sixes, demonstrating his class and aggression.
Du Plessis performed a captain’s knock, scoring 54 runs off 39 balls, including three fours and three sixes. Rajat Patidar continued the momentum, smashing 41 runs off 23 balls, including two fours and four sixes, to boost the run rate in the middle overs.
Cameron Green offered a significant boost in the latter stages, scoring 38 runs off only 17 balls, including three fours and three sixes. Dinesh Karthik and Glenn Maxwell added quick runs toward the end, scoring 14 and 16 runs in as many balls, respectively. Their aggressive batting allowed RCB to produce a tough total of 218/5 against CSK.
Chasing a difficult total of 219, CSK suffered an early setback when Ruturaj Gaikwad was out for a golden duck on the first ball. Rachin Ravindra, on the other hand, provided some steadiness to the innings with a well-constructed 61 runs off 37 balls, including five fours and three sixes.
Despite the early loss, Ajinkya Rahane played a solid knock, scoring 33 runs off 22 balls, including three fours and one six. Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni sought to resuscitate the innings, with Jadeja scoring 42 runs off 22 balls, including three fours and three sixes, and Dhoni adding 25 runs off 13 balls, including three fours and one six.
The middle-order troubles, notably poor scores from Daryl Mitchell (4 runs off 6 balls), Shivam Dube (7 runs off 15 balls), and Mitchell Santner (3 runs off 4 balls), hampered CSK’s pursuit. CSK eventually fell short, scoring 191/7 in their 20 overs.
