Jay Shah clarifies the reports of BCCI approaching Australian cricketers for Team India’s head coach role
Recently, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued a call for applications to fill the role of head coach for the senior national men’s cricket team. As Rahul Dravid’s tenure comes to an end in June 2024, the board is actively looking for appropriate candidates to fill this job, which has a duration of 3.5 years.
Following BCCI Secretary Jay Shah’s statements signaling the board’s willingness to consider overseas applicants, speculation has been rampant about prospective candidates for the role.
Rumours have also circulated about Justin Langer’s prospective coaching candidacy, although he just made a statement clarifying his position on the topic.
Justin Langer’s stance on the head coach position
Langer regarded the position as fantastic, but he declined due to the great strain involved. Langer had previously served in a similar post for Australia for four years and stated his worries. He also recalled receiving counsel from KL Rahul, who advised him not to take the BCCI offer since the national team faces far more pressure and politics than IPL clubs.
Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting recently disclosed that he, too, declined an offer from the BCCI for personal reasons. Ponting claimed that he was not prepared to take on the responsibility at this time.
Jay Shah clarified the matter.
The day after Langer revealed that he had declined an offer to coach the Indian men’s cricket team, which was inspired by members of the BCCI, board secretary Shah stated unequivocally that the BCCI had not approached any former Australian cricketer with a coaching offer.
“Neither I nor the BCCI approached any former Australian cricketer with a coaching offer. “The reports circulating in certain media sections are completely false,” claimed the BCCI secretary in a statement.
