Afghanistan set a new record at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, defeating debutants Uganda by 125 runs at Providence Stadium in Guyana. This is the fourth-largest win in the history of the T20 World Cup.

Uganda, full of anticipation for their first T20 World Cup, got off to a strong start in the game. However, the Afghan openers, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, gave an incredible batting display that ended their aspirations. The pair put completed the second-highest opening stand in T20 World Cup history, scoring 154 runs together.

Known for his aggressive batting approach, Gurbaz was on fire from the opening ball. In just forty-five deliveries, he hammered an explosive 76 runs. Zadran, his partner, was able to play a more calm innings thanks to this scorching hit. Zadran began carefully and picked up speed towards the finish, hitting nine fours and a six in his well-crafted 70 runs off 46 balls.

After the pair smashed records, Afghanistan’s batting progress slowed considerably. Within their allotted 20 overs, Uganda’s bowlers were able to limit them to a score of 183/5.

Afghanistan’s bowling arsenal proved to be too much for the Ugandan batsmen, even with a small score. The Afghan bowlers, spearheaded by the outstanding left-arm seamer Fazalhaq Farooqi, tore through the Ugandan batting lineup. With a 5/9 spell—the fourth-best bowling average ever recorded in a T20 World Cup match—Farooqi was unplayable. Farooqi was well-supported by the remainder of the Afghan bowling attack, which held Uganda to a meager 58 runs and helped their country achieve history.
