Anrich Nortje was adjudged Player of the Match for his brilliant fast bowling.
South Africa defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Monday (June 3). South Africa’s initial triumph in the T20 World Cup 2024 was the result of a fierce bowling effort led by the unstoppable Anrich Nortje.
Sri Lanka, who chose to bat first after winning the toss, were swept out for 77 runs in 19.1 overs. Their batting lineup just couldn’t handle the pace and precision of South Africa’s bowling assault. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis fell cheaply, laying the groundwork for a dismal batting performance. Only Angelo Mathews (16 runs) could resist the Proteas assault.
Anrich Nortje, Sri Lanka’s express fast bowler, was the architect of their collapse. He blasted through Sri Lanka’s batting order, taking four wickets for seven runs in four overs, his career high. His sheer pace and swing were too much for Sri Lanka’s batsmen, who were often tormented by his deliveries. Kagiso Rabada (2 wickets), Keshav Maharaj (2 wickets), and Ottneil Baartman (1 wicket) gave outstanding support, ensuring Sri Lanka never recovered from their early woes.
South Africa had little issue chasing down a modest 78-run goal. While they lost a few wickets along the road, their opening batsman, Quinton de Kock (20 runs), set a solid platform. Heinrich Klaasen (19 not out) and David Miller (6 not out) provided a clean chase, leading the Proteas home comfortably in 16.2 overs.
