Bangladesh Grow up to Super 8 record win over Nepal
2024.06.17
Bangladesh clinched a 21-run victory over Nepal in Match 37 of the T20 World Cup 2024.
Bangladesh suffered an early loss as Tanzid Hasan was removed on the first delivery of the encounter, caught and bowled by Sompal Kam. The top order continued to fail, with Litton Das and Najmul Hossain Shanto falling soon, leaving Bangladesh on 21/3 by the fifth over. Shakib Al Hasan tried to steady the innings with a patient 17 from 22 balls, but was caught by Rohit Paudel’s LBW judgment. Towhid Hridoy’s quick 9 off 7 balls offered a temporary spark, but frequent wickets hampered Bangladesh’s progress. Rishad Hossain provided some late impetus with a quickfire 13 off 7 balls toward the finish, enabling Bangladesh reach 106 before being bowled out in 19.3 overs.
Chasing 107 for victory, Nepal’s innings began disastrously, with early wickets falling in short succession. Kushal Bhurtel (4), Anil Sah (0), and Rohit Paudel (1) all left early, leaving Nepal reeling. Aasif Sheikh responded with 17 runs before succumbing to Mustafizur Rahman‘s bowling. Kushal Malla fought on for 27 runs, but Nepal failed to build meaningful partnerships and crumbled in the end. They were finally knocked out for 85 runs in 19.2 overs, 21 runs short of their target.
Bangladesh’s success was partly made possible by their bowlers, notably Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Mustafizur. Tanzim Hasan was outstanding, taking four wickets for seven runs in four overs and putting tremendous pressure on the Nepalese hitters throughout his time. Mustafizur also contributed substantially, taking three wickets for seven runs in his four overs, demonstrating his trademark variations and control. Shakib contributed two wickets to Nepal’s collapse, guaranteeing Bangladesh’s qualifying for the Super Eight stage.
