Salt was adjudged Player of the Match for his fiery 87 not out.
England won convincingly by 8 wickets against the West Indies in a high-scoring match at St Lucia’s Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium. This victory improved their standing in Group 2 of the Super 8 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
England’s decision to bowl first kept the West Indies batters under control for the most part. While Johnson Charles (38) and Nicholas Pooran (36) provided steadiness at the top of the order, Rovman Powell’s stunning knock of 36 runs off only 17 balls powered the Windies innings to a respectable 180/4 in 20 overs. Sherfane Rutherford (28 not out) also contributed significant late runs.
England’s bowling attack split the benefits. Adil Rashid (1/21) and Moeen Ali (1/15) were frugal, but Jofra Archer (1/34) and Liam Livingstone (1/20) took key wickets.
With a target of 181, England openers Philip Salt and Jos Buttler got off to a blazing start. Salt, in particular, was irrepressible, scoring 87 runs off 47 deliveries, including seven fours and five huge sixes. Jonny Bairstow (48 not out) offered superb assistance with a quickfire performance, ensuring England achieved the goal comfortably in the 18th over, losing only two wickets.
Salt’s dominating batting performance won him the well-deserved Player of the Match honor.
