In the 41st game of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, South Africa defeated the United States of America by an innings at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua. After winning the toss, the USA chose to bowl first and faced a strong South African batting order that amassed a massive 194/4 in the 20 overs allocated.
Quinton de Kock, who hit an incredible 74 off 40 balls with 7 fours and 5 sixes, was the focal point of South Africa’s innings. Aiden Markram made a solid 46 off 32 balls to support the score, while Reeza Hendricks chipped in with 11 off 11 before being removed. With some late pyrotechnics, Heinrich Klaasen added 36 off 22 balls, while Tristan Stubbs chipped in with a useful 20 off 16. The USA bowlers had varying degrees of success; the standouts were Harmeet Singh and Saurabh Netravalkar, who each took two wickets and restricted the score to 2/21 and 2/24, respectively.
The USA began their spirited chase of 195 with Steven Taylor scoring 24 off of 14 balls. Andries Gous then took over the innings with a heroic 80 off 47 balls, which included five fours and five sixes. The USA was losing wickets at the other end steadily despite his efforts, with Harmeet (38 off 22) being the only player who could muster any resistance. South Africa’s defense was greatly aided by Kagiso Rabada, who claimed three wickets in his four overs for a mere eighteen runs. The USA finished at 176/6 after losing wickets to Anrich Nortje, Tabraiz Shamsi, and Keshav Maharaj.
By winning Player of the Match because to his spectacular batting, De Kock set a high bar that the USA found difficult to reach. The methodical bowling efforts of Netravalkar and Harmeet were essential in keeping South Africa’s total under control. But against South Africa’s skilled bowling attack, particularly Rabada, whose tight spell proved crucial to his team’s victory, the USA middle order crumbled.
