The Sri Lankan women defeated the West Indies women in five weeks, led by Vishmi Gunaratne, 50, and Kavisha Dilhari, 40, to win the series 2-0.
Yesterday at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium in Hambantota, Sri Lankan women completed their three-match series victory by defeating the West Indies women for the second time in a row by five wickets.
After batting out a 21 for 2 deficit after 5.4 overs, the Lankan batters overcame the early dismissals of their star performer skipper Chamari Athapaththu and Harshitha Samarawickrama to reach 93 for 5, with young Vishmi Gunaratne taking on the responsibility to see her side home with a timely maiden half century off exactly 50 balls. This was the first bilateral ODI series triumph in 16 years.
Gunaratne, the 18-year-old schoolgirl prodigy, took to the task with great ease after witnessing her skipper be bowled for 1 by bowler Aaliyah Alleynne in the third over and Harshitha Samarawickrama go for a duck. She ended up hitting 9 boundaries and a six in her debut. Kavisha Dilhari, who hit 28 off 38, including four boundaries, provided her with excellent assistance as the 58-run stand at the third wicket eliminated the West Indians from the game.
After choosing to bat first, the West Indies Women were dismissed for 91 runs in 19.3 overs by off-spinner Kavisha Dilhari, who claimed 4 for 20 with only Rashada Williams getting 24 runs, including 4 boundaries, for the visitors. Achini Kulasuriya and captain Athapaththu both took two wickets to accelerate the visitors’ downfall.
