At Providence Stadium in Guyana, in the second semifinal of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, Team India defeated England. India put on a dominant display and overcame the English team to secure their place in the crucial competition final. India and South Africa will now square off at the summit on June 29.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma led from the front after England sent him into bat, making a crucial 57 off 39 balls. Sharma’s performance, which included two sixes and six fours, set the tone for India’s innings despite early wicket losses.
India’s middle order, especially Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav, made significant runs to lead their side to a respectable score of 171/7 in 20 overs. With Pandya scoring an explosive 23 off 13 balls and Suryakumar scoring a cool 47 off 36 balls, India was able to sustain a consistent run pace. England was under pressure as a result of contributions from Ravindra Jadeja (17 off 9) and a few useful runs from the last overs.
At key moments, England’s bowling unit—led by Chris Jordan’s outstanding 3/37 in 3 overs—was able to contain India’s potent hitters. England was left chasing a difficult goal despite wickets taken by Reece Topley, Jofra Archer, Sam Curran, and Adil Rashid.
In response, a disciplined Indian bowling assault caused England’s batting order to collapse. Jos Buttler and Philip Salt, the openers, had a rough start, with Salt falling early for five. Despite Buttler’s fast strike of 23 off 15 balls to try to steady the innings, England continued to lose wickets at regular intervals. Harry Brook led the team in scoring with 25 off 19, but his efforts were in useless because the other players in the squad failed to provide much of a challenge.
With three wickets apiece, India’s spinners Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav were the shining lights of the bowling innings. England’s middle and lower order was completely destroyed by Axar’s 3/23 in 4 overs and Kuldeep’s 3/19 in 4 overs. Jadeja and Arshdeep Singh kept the pressure on with frugal deliveries, while Jasprit Bumrah chipped in with two wickets for 12 runs in his 2.4 overs.
India eventually won by a commanding 68 runs after bowling out England for only 103 in 16.4 overs. This convincing victory demonstrated both India’s potent bowling assault and batting depth. Axar’s all-around effort won him the Player of the Match title, capping off an incredible day for the Indian squad as they triumphantly advanced to the ICC Men’s T20 final.
