Following the Asian team’s miserable ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 performance, head coach Chris Silverwood of Sri Lanka announced his resignation on Thursday 27 th June.

The former England pacer resigned from his position, which he has held since April 2022, citing personal reasons.

“Working as an international coach requires extended time away from family and friends. I feel it’s time for me to go back home and spend some quality time with my family after having long talks with them and feeling sad,” Silverwood stated.

“I want to express my gratitude to the SLC management, backroom crew, coaches, and players for their support throughout my stay in Sri Lanka. None of the success would have been possible without your help.

Under Silverwood’s leadership, Sri Lanka emerged victorious in the Asia Cup 2022 and advanced to the 2023 final, only to be soundly defeated by India.

The Asian team, captained by Chris Silverwood, also triumphed against Australia in a home ODI series, although they were unable to get past the first round of any ICC competition.

In the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2022, they were eliminated from the Super 12s; in the ODI World Cup in 2023, they were ousted from the group stage.

Following the aforementioned campaigns, Sri Lanka had a poor T20 World Cup 2024, losing their group stage matches against Bangladesh and South Africa and having their match against Nepal canceled.
