On Friday, June 21, at the age of 84, renowned statistician Frank Duckworth—one of the developers of the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method—passed away.
Throughout the sport, the DLS approach is frequently employed to update objectives in games disrupted by bad weather.
After been created by Duckworth and Tony Lewis, it was first known as the Duckworth-Lewis (DL) technique. 1997 saw the introduction of the technique in international cricket.
In 2001, the International Cricket Council (ICC) publicly recognized the technique as the acceptable approach for determining updated objectives in games disrupted by inclement weather.
The approach was renamed the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method in 2014 following modifications made by famous Australian statistician Steven Stern and the retirements of Duckworth and Lewis.
Prior to his retirement from the ICC in 2014, Frank Duckworth worked there as a consultant statistician. In recognition of his contributions to sport, he was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2010.
According to a statement from Wasim Khan, General Manager of Cricket Operations at the ICC, “Frank was a top statistician who was respected by peers as well as the wider cricket fraternity.”
We have been using the DLS system, which he co-created, in international cricket for more than 20 years now since it is a time-tested approach.
