Los Cafeterias not only contributed to their record books but also secured Colombia’s spot in the Copa America Semifinals.
After Colombia defeated Panama 5-0 in the CONMEBOL Copa America Quarterfinals, there was much for Los Cafeteros to rejoice about when the dust eventually cleared.
The Colombians accomplished a great deal on Saturday afternoon in addition to the apparent achievement of making it to the tournament’s semifinals.
For starters, they won the event by their biggest margin of victory ever, 5-0, over Panama. They defeated Venezuela 4-0 in 1979 to set their previous record. There are just four previous teams in the CONMEBOL Copa America knockout stages that have won by five goals or more.
You have undoubtedly seen Colombia’s impressive header total if you have been watching them throughout the competition. Colombia are really the first side in the twenty-first century to score four headers in a single addition, and they have two games remaining.
Great service from captain James Rodriguez is a major factor in the goals that were headed. Rodriguez is only the second player to reach five assists in a single edition since Opta began recording assists in 2011. In the match against Panama, he scored a goal and provided two assists to attain that milestone.
Rodriguez was involved in all three of those first-half goals, making this only the second occasion in the competition that Colombia has scored three goals in the opening forty-five minutes (the first being in 1957).
Colombia’s victory over Panama also guaranteed that they would tie the record for the longest undefeated streak in the nation’s history—27 games. Colombia’s current winning streak stands at 21 victories and 6 draws. Los Cafeteros had 13 victories and 14 draws in their prior run.
So far, the Colombian squad as a whole has had a terrific tournament, but winger Luis Diaz has been particularly noteworthy. He scored his sixth CONMEBOL Copa America goal against Panama, moving him up to third place in his nation’s scoring standings behind only Víctor Aristizábal (8) and Arnoldo Iguarán (10).
Colombia will be encouraged by how much more they can do and pleased of how far they have come throughout their flawless run to the Semifinals.
