Euro 2024 final England vs spain
2024.07.13
Just two of the twenty-four teams still have a chance to win the most important prize in European international football.
In the men’s 2024 European Championship final on Sunday, July 14, Spain and England will square off; the former hopes to capture their fourth Euros championship, while the latter hopes to write their name on the trophy for the first time.
Three years ago, Gareth Southgate’s England were in this exact same situation, but they lost to Italy on penalties. We’re examining their head-to-head records, paths to the final, and the important players to keep an eye on ahead of the thrilling end of this year’s Euro 2024 competition. See below for all the information.
Spain vs England: Head-to-head record
This Sunday’s matchup between these two national teams will be their first since 2018. It will also be their 27th head-to-head match since 1929. You could be forgiven, considering recent history, for believing that Spain has won more games than the Three Lions, but in reality, the Three Lions have won 14 of the 27 matches between them.
Spain, the victor of their first-ever match that is known to exist, has emerged victorious ten times, with three draws disputed. The Spaniards have won five of the nine matches since the year 2000, boasting a superior record over the English. Nonetheless, there was a moment when the English were unbeatable, winning seven straight meetings between 1960 and 1980. In 1981, they were defeated by Spain for the first time in twenty years.
However, Southgate’s team will undoubtedly be buoyed by the knowledge that they have never lost to their Spanish opponents at the European Championships after four attempts. Their 1996 attempt resulted in a 0-0 draw, but the English won thanks to penalties.
