Hasaranga’s last assignment as Sri Lanka captain was in the T20 World Cup, when the 2014 winners failed to advance to the Super Eight stage.

Ahead of the forthcoming three-match series against India, Wanindu Hasaranga announced on Thursday that he was resigning from his position as Sri Lanka’s T20 International captain.

India will go on a limited-overs tour to Sri Lanka, starting with three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) at the Pallekele International Stadium on July 26, 27, and 29. Thereafter, three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) will be held in Colombo. According to a statement from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), “Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to inform the public that National Men’s 20I Captain Wanindu Hasaranga has decided to resign from the captaincy.”

Hasaranga stated that he chose to give up his leadership responsibilities and continue playing for Sri Lanka Cricket since it is in the best interests of the team, according to the press release. During Hasaranga’s final match as captain of Sri Lanka, the 2014 winners were unable to go past the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup.

The statement reported Hasaranga as stating, “I will always support and stand by my team and leadership, and I will always give Sri Lanka my all as a player.” Furthermore, Hasaranga’s resignation has been accepted by the SLC. “While acknowledging his resignation, Sri Lanka Cricket would like to clarify that Hasaranga will continue to be a key member of our international cricket team,” the statement said.
