Six athletes have formally declared their intention to compete for Sri Lanka at the Olympics in Paris this year.

This year’s competition will include Viren Nettasinghe in the men’s badminton singles event, Ganga Seneviratne in the women’s 100-meter backstroke event, and Kyle Abesinghe in the men’s 100-meter freestyle event.

Aruna Darshan qualified for the men’s 400-meter event, Tarushi Karunaratne for the women’s 800-meter event, and Nadeesha Syakartane for the women’s javelin event.

It is noteworthy that Viren Nettasinghe, who is now ranked 74th in the world, is the youngest participant to qualify directly for this year’s Olympic badminton men’s singles competition. With 688 rating points, Ganga Seneviratne and Kyle Abeysinghe qualified for the Olympics, respectively, with 776 points and 688 points.

Nadisha Lakemge is ranked 25th out of the 32 competitors that qualified for the Olympics this year, which is the highest rating of any Sri Lankan athlete. In the meanwhile, Aruna was rated 47th out of 48 players, and Tarushi was placed 44th.

Aruna’s victory also signified the first time an athlete from Sri Lanka qualified for the men’s 400-meter event in twenty years. This year’s Olympic opening ceremony is set to take place in Paris, France on July 26 at 7:30 PM. Viren Nettasinghe and Nadisha Siyatharage have been assigned to fly the Sri Lankan flag during the ceremony.
