In order to lead India in the forthcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka, senior batter Rohit Sharma is expected to shorten his holiday and return early, according to reports released by Indian media on Thursday.

India will go on a three-match ODI and T20I series trip of Sri Lanka. Gautam Gambhir, who took over as India’s head coach after Rahul Dravid resigned after leading the team to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 success, will be making his first assignment since being hired. The forthcoming white-ball trip will be his first.

According to earlier speculations, after guiding India to victory in the T20 World Cup 2024, veteran players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah will extend their sabbatical from cricket by missing the ODI series against Sri Lanka.

In the absence of senior players, KL Rahul was supposed to command the team; however, new rumors indicate that Sharma would take back the captaincy for the ODI series.

Given that India will only play six ODIs prior to the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025, Gambhir allegedly pressed on having senior players in the series. This led to the decision that was made.

The SLC has released the itinerary, which states that India will arrive in Sri Lanka on July 22. The T20I series will start on July 26 and the second and third T20Is will be played on July 27 and 29, respectively.

Pallekele International Cricket Stadium will host all three Twenty20 Internationals before the action moves to Colombo for the ODI series.

August 1 marks the start of the three-match ODI series between India and Sri Lanka; August 4 and 7 will be the dates of the remaining matches. The R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium is the venue for all three One-Day Internationals.
