Sri Lanka Women staged a dominant performance in Match 12 of Group B of the Women’s Asia Cup 2024 at Dambulla on Wednesday (July 24), defeating Thailand Women by a comfortable 10-wicket margin. Sri Lanka successfully chased down the goal of 94 in 11.3 overs without losing a wicket, demonstrating their domination in the current competition.
Thailand, who chose to bat first, struggled to create momentum against a disciplined Sri Lankan bowling assault. They scored 93/7 in their 20 overs. Nannapat Koncharoenkai was the outstanding batsman, batting an unbeaten 47 from 53 balls, including five boundaries. Despite her resilient innings, Thailand’s hitters unable to build significant partnerships, resulting in a low total.
Thailand’s innings began shakily, with Nattaya Boochatham being bowled for a duck on the very first delivery by Achini Kulasuriya. Aphisara Suwanchonrathi attempted to offer some stability with a fast 12 from 9 balls, but fell to Fernando. Phannita Maya (2 off 18 balls) and Chanida Sutthiruang (4 off 3 balls) couldn’t do much as the wickets continued to fall.
Sri Lanka’s bowlers were in good form, with Kavisha Dilhari leading the charge, claiming two wickets for 13 runs in a 4-over session. Inoshi Priyadharshani, Chamari Athapaththu, Sugandika Kumari, and Achini Kulasuriya each took one wicket, keeping Thailand’s scoring rate under control throughout the innings.
Sri Lanka breezed over a modest 94-run mark in just 11.3 overs. Vishmi Gunaratne and Chamari Athapaththu made an excellent start, going unbroken to seal a resounding victory. Gunaratne hit a solid 39 off 34 balls, including four boundaries and one six, to confidently lead the chase. Sri Lankan skipper Athapaththu delivered a scorching innings, smashing 49 off 35 balls with two fours and four sixes to clinch the contest in style.
Thailand’s bowlers struggled to make an effect on Sri Lanka’s openers. Chanida Sutthiruang was the most economical, allowing 18 runs in her three overs. Boochatham and Thipatcha Putthawong attempted to control the run flow but were unable to break the opening pair. Onnicha Kamchomphu and Maya were the most expensive, allowing 22 and 17 runs, respectively, in their brief appearance.
