The ECB is looking for a new white-ball head coach
2024.08.04
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is looking for a new white-ball head coach after Matthew Mott stepped down on Tuesday (July 30).
During Mott’s tenure, England struggled to defend their titles in both white-ball formats. In the meantime, former England hitter Marcus Trescothick, who worked as Mott’s assistant, has been named head coach for the next white-ball home series against Australia in September.
Mott’s tenure began promisingly in 2022, with bilateral series triumphs and a successful T20 World Cup 2022 campaign. However, following performances have been lackluster. The Jos Buttler-led England team failed to defend their championships, with a terrible performance in the ODI World Cup 2023 in India and a semi-final appearance in the T20 World Cup 2024.
Kumar Sangakkara, a Sri Lankan icon, has apparently surfaced as a potential candidate for the prestigious position. Currently the Director of Cricket and Head Coach of Rajasthan Royals (RR), Sangakkara has developed a good working relationship with England’s white-ball skipper Buttler during their time in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Despite reports, Sangakkara has not confirmed a formal approach from the ECB.
