For the losers, it was a disappointing end to an otherwise impressive season. Mumbai Indians Innings: 228/5 (20 Overs)After winning the toss and opting to bat, MI set a formidable total.

Rohit Sharma hit his 300th six during his 81 run knock while Jonny Bairstow and Suryakumar Yadav also made significant contributions as Mumbai Indians posted a challenging 228 for 5 against Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2025 eliminator here on Friday. Put into bat, Mumbai got off to a solid start as Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan put on 73 runs for the first wicket. Rohit, who became only the second batsman after Virat Kohli to score 7,000 runs for a single IPL franchise, was in his elements. He hit five fours and seven sixes during his 50 ball stay. His opening partner Kishan, who struggled for form and was dropped from the Indian squad for the World Cup, hit four boundaries and cleared the fence twice during his 37 ball 41.

The Titans struck back by dismissing both the set batsmen in quick succession but that only brought Jonny Bairstow in the middle who along with Suryakumar Yadav took charge of the innings. Bairstow smashed 47 off just 22 balls with five fours and two sixes while Surya Kumar hit 33 off 20. Tilak Varma also contributed with a quick 25 off 11 balls as Mumbai scored 75 runs in the last five overs. Hardik Pandya bowled the final over and conceded 25 runs while picking up one wicket. But it was too little too late as Mumbai posted a challenging total on the board.

For the Titans, Mohammed Shami and Rashid Khan picked up two wickets each. Rohit Sharma’s innings was the standout feature of the first half. Not only did he guide his team to a strong start, but he also achieved a couple of notable milestones. Firstly, he surpassed the 7,000 run mark in the IPL, becoming only the second player after Virat Kohli to reach this feat for a single franchise. Secondly, he hit his 300th six in the tournament, showcasing his power hitting prowess.

Gujarat Titans Innings: 208/6 (20 Overs)Chasing a target of 229, GT’s innings unfolded as follows.
Shubman Gill, the GT captain, was dismissed for just 1 run in the first over bowled by Trent Boult, leaving them at 4 for 1. Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar then steadied the ship, putting on 100 runs for the second wicket. Sudharsan top scored for GT with 81 runs off 49 balls, hitting seven fours and three sixes.

Washington Sundar played a crucial role too, contributing 48 runs. GT looked well set at one point, but the introduction of spin curtailed their scoring rate. Just when it seemed GT was getting back on track, they lost the plot in the death overs as the required run rate climbed. Sherfane Rutherford tried to inject some late fireworks, smashing 31 not out off 10 balls, but it wasn’t enough as GT fell short by 20 runs. For MI, Jason Behrendorff and Piyush Chawla picked up two wickets each.

With this win, MI advanced to Qualifier 2 where they will face the Punjab Kings on Sunday for a spot in the final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The loser of this match will get another chance to qualify for the final as they will take on the winner of the Eliminator 3 between Chennai and Rajasthan on Saturday.
