Bangladesh is dented by New Zealand spinners. After the Day 01
Even though Bangladesh reached 310 runs on Day 1 in Sylhet, New Zealand’s strategy to defeat them at home and at their own game is off to a good start. After taking four wickets, Ish Sodhi and Ajaz Patel claimed three more, making Glenn Phillips the unsung hero for the visitors. Bangladesh lost nine wickets on the first day of play.
After winning the toss, Bangladesh naturally chose to score a lot of runs. Before Zakir Hasan, the first of the seven casualties, began spinning bowling, Mahmudul Hasan Joy and he even completed ten overs of fast bowling. In the midst of Zakir’s attempt to cut and hit the off-stump, Ajaz Patel slipped one quicker through. Najmul Hassain When Shanto faced Ajaz, his goal was to upset the rhythm of New Zealand’s spinners. On the other hand, Shanto misplayed an innocent full-toss from Phillips while giving him the charge, which led to a mid-on hit to Kane Williamson, which signaled the end of Bangladesh’s first session.
Bangladesh’s recovery was spearheaded by Mahmudul and Mominul Haque, despite their survival of a few small cracks that flew between the New Zealand slip cordon. With a stand of 88 runs, the two batted out most of the second session, providing Bangladesh with a strong foundation on which to build a big innings. However, Phillips again threw a spanner in the works by taking Mominul’s wicket.
Similar to Shanto versus Ajaz, he attempted to cut a ball that wasn’t there for that particular shot and ultimately gave it to Tom Blundell behind the stumps. Not long after, Ish Sodhi got the well-positioned Mahmudul to nick one behind to Daryl Mitchell at slip, who did a fantastic job diving to his right to get his hands under the ball. Bangladesh lost to Tea at 184 for 4, and as the day progressed, the ball began to turn much more, and they went on to spiral even further in the post-Tea session.
Although all of Bangladesh’s lower-order hitters received starts, none of them were able to sustain their good start to the match until the end to give their team the early advantage. Bangladesh managed to cross the 200-run barrier with the help of Mushfiqur Rahim and Shahadat Hossain, but Phillips struck again with the former’s wicket. Mushfiqur mistimed his pass to Williamson in the middle of the pitch, giving Phillips the lead and going big.
Before a moment of indecision caused him to edge one from Kyle Jamieson to Daryl Mitchell at slips, Mehidy Hasan Miraz looked good for his 20. After that, Bangladesh went from 233 for 6 to 290 for 9, losing wickets for every 20 or so runs they scored.
Though Taijul Islam and Shoriful Islam batted out 3.1 overs and hit four boundaries in them to take the team past 300, New Zealand’s hopes of finishing the innings on Day 1 were dashed. After that, bad light caused the day’s play to end a little early, with 85 overs bowled. Although they have successfully twisted a web around Bangladesh’s batting order, New Zealand’s true progress in the match will depend on how well they bat, as the surface for spinners is improving.
