When Britain successfully defended its equestrian team eventing crown on Monday, it won its first gold medal at the Olympics in Paris.

The final leg of the eventing competition, the jumping component, was won by Laura Collett, Tom McEwen, and Rosalind Canter after Saturday’s soggy dressage and Sunday’s cross-country. Along with a different teammate, Collett and McEwen also took home gold in the same event from the Tokyo Games three years prior.

The last of the three British riders, Collett, received a minor penalty for exceeding the course time limit, but it had no bearing on the outcome.

I’m a world champion. The 34-year-old Collett remarked, “I have never, ever ridden into an atmosphere like that.” “Fortunately, my staff and London make for reliable partners.”

Japan took home the bronze medal, while France won the silver.
